This lightning-like meteorological appearance is called a “red sprite.” It occurs in a part of the atmosphere above called the mesosphere. “A few weeks ago, I got really lucky when I recorded a timelapse of a thunderstorm off the coast of South Africa. One of the frames in the timelapse was a lightning bolt. And one of the frames contained a red sprite,” Matthew Dominick wrote on X, Het Nieuwsblad reports. “If there are any experts in the field of ‘red sprite’, I would like some advice on how to capture more of them. Obviously, you have to look for the thunderstorms, but I think the stronger the storm, the better,” he added.
