As if being overrun by gray squirrels wasn’t enough, red squirrels in England are now threatened by a pox outbreak. Volunteers dedicated to their protection express growing concern.

red squirrel protection efforts face new challenges

For several years, the United Kingdom has been actively protecting the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) against the invasion of the gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). The gray squirrel, considered an invasive species, was introduced from North America in the late 19th century. This introduction poses significant problems for the native red squirrel population. As a result, these small rodents are slowly disappearing, replaced by their American cousins.

Apart from competing for resources, red squirrels face a deadly threat from a disease transmitted by gray squirrels. These invasive species are asymptomatic carriers of the squirrel poxvirus, which is harmless to them but lethal to red squirrels. An outbreak has been reported across various locations in England.

Volunteers working to protect red squirrels have described themselves as “devastated” following sightings of infected individuals in Northumberland’s Cramlington and District areas. Recent analyses confirmed positive cases of the parapoxvirus amongst carcasses sent for examination.

  • The virus causes a slow and painful death for red squirrels
  • Approximately four cases have been identified within two separate woodlands

  1. Avoid leaving food outdoors where it may attract wild animals
  2. Report sick or dead squirrels immediately

The Bedlington and District Red Squirrel Group reports another possible infected case at Gallagher Park but has yet to confirm its status due to elusive sightings on camera footage.

Volunteers continue monitoring red squirrel populations closely with hopes that these cases are isolated incidents. Preventing transmission between different populations remains critical. Ian Glendinning of Northern Red Squirrels emphasizes how devastating further outbreaks would be after extensive volunteer efforts were invested in programs across Northern England.
