When will the next Starship launch take place?

What To Know

  • The billionaire entrepreneur said the flight could take place in about three to five weeks, with the goal of surpassing the performance of previous flights.
  • Although the flight ended with a failure during re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere, it was nonetheless a significant milestone in Starship’s development.
  • For the next one, the ship will have to face the extreme temperatures generated during Earth’s atmospheric reentry, then attempt a controlled landing in the ocean.

The next launch of SpaceX’s Starship megarocket is imminent, according to Elon Musk in a recent statement. The billionaire entrepreneur said the flight could take place in about three to five weeks, with the goal of surpassing the performance of previous flights.

Constant progress

Consisting of a huge 70m-high booster and a 50m-high upper stage, the Starship rocket is designed to be fully reusable. SpaceX would like to use it to send humans and cargo to the Moon, and later to Mars. There is also talk of offering “point-to-point” flights above Earth, in particular on behalf of the US Army. In addition, from SpaceX’s Starbase site in South Texas, the Starship has already carried out three test flightsshowing incremental improvements with each iteration. In detail, the first flight, which was anticipated with great enthusiasm, encountered difficulties right from the takeoff. The two stages of the Starship did not separate as planned, which led to a critical system failure. For safety reasons, SpaceX therefore chose to end the flight by exploding the vehicle in the atmosphere only four minutes after takeoff. Although this was a setback, this flight had allowed SpaceX to collect crucial data to improve future launches. The second flight showed progress, with a successful separation of the stages. However, it occurred earlier than expected, which limited the flight duration and the data collection capacity. Nevertheless, this flight had once again allowed SpaceX to validate certain aspects of the Starship design and to gather valuable information for future adjustments. Finally, during the third flight, the Super Heavy successfully positioned itself for a planned splashdown, which demonstrated better control of the descent and landing phases. During this time, the ship successfully reached orbital velocity, indicating progress in its ability to operate in space for extended periods. Although the flight ended with a failure during re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere, it was nonetheless a significant milestone in Starship’s development.

A more ambitious next launch

Overall, these test flights were essential to identify technical challenges, validate design concepts, and refine Starship’s performance. For the next one, the ship will have to face the extreme temperatures generated during Earth’s atmospheric reentry, then attempt a controlled landing in the ocean. It will also be a question of simulate booster recovery Super Heavy in the Gulf of Mexico. If this test is successful, SpaceX could then attempt to actually recover its booster during the next flight using its “Mechazilla” tower from the Starbase site. As for the schedule, SpaceX is aiming for a liftoff within three to five weeks. However, logistical hurdles remain, including obtaining a launch license from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The agency is overseeing an investigation into the March 14 flight incidents, which could delay the process.
